Finding Answers in the Treatment of Heart Disease in Women
It has been shown that women comprise only 25% of participants in all heart-related research studies.  The Women's Heart Center works closely with the Fox Valley Clinical Research Center, a dedicated research facility within Rush-Copley Heart Institute to provide cutting-edge therapies to patients and learn more about the unique aspects of women's heart conditions.  Study participants can gain access to the newest investigational therapies often not available to the general public.

We are currently enrolling subjects for the following studies:

  • Atrial Fibrillation
    Currently enrolling:
Study comparing a currently prescribed anticoagulation medication to an investigational drug and its ability to prevent stroke in patients with chronic or intermittent atrial fibrillation. Qualified participants will receive study drugs and lab tests at no cost. Please contact a research coordinator at 630.723.3485 to see if you qualify.

  • Diabetes Mellitus

Qualifying participants must be at least 18 years of age and currently on one or no more than two oral diabetic medications. Qualifying subjects will receive medication, lab work, and physical exam at no cost. Qualifying participants will be compensated for time and travel.

Soon To Enroll:
Study to evaluate an investigational drug in subjects with Diabetes Mellitus. Subjects must have diagnosis of diabetes for at least 3 months and drug naive or taking no more than one oral diabetic medication.

  • High Blood Pressure
    Currently enrolling:
Study comparing the effects of two FDA approved drugs for the treatment of high blood pressure. Subjects may currently be drug naive or taking up to two high blood pressure medications. Qualified participants will receive study drug, study labs and procedures at no cost and compensation for time and travel for study visits. Please contact our research coordinators at 630.723.3485 for further information.
  • Metabolic Syndrome
    Currently enrolling:
Study to evaluate the effect of an investigational drug for reducing the risk of major cardiovascular events in abdominally obese patients with multiple risk factors. Subjects must be 55 years of age with abdominal obesity and additional risk factors. Please contact us at 630.734.3485 for additional information if you feel you may qualify.

  • Sleep Disorders
    Currently enrolling:
Study of investigational drug to assess it's effectiveness and safety in the treatment of primary insomnia. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and have primary insomnia. Qualifying subjects will receive study drug at no cost and a stipend to cover cost of travel to and from clinic. Please contact us at 630.723.3485 if you think you may qualify or would like more information on this study.

Why participate in a clinical study?
Study subjects participate in clinical trials for a variety of reasons. Some subjects may get access to promising new drugs before they are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or available over the counter. They also get excellent care from the physicians conducting the studies and in most instances all care related to the clinical trial and trial medications are free. However, clinical trials are not for everyone. They require a commitment from participants to follow trial treatment plans and frequent research visits.

Why are clinical studies important?
Clinical trials are required before pharmaceutical or biotech companies can market a new drug or device. Pre-approved drugs typically go through three phase of research before the FDA will give approval to market a drug. Each successive phase involves larger numbers of participants. Phase III studies often include thousands of study subjects and typically last for several years. Funding for clinical research comes from the federal government or in most cases from private industry such as pharmaceutical companies. The sponsor of the research hires physicians to conduct the clinical trials resulting in no cost to participants.
